In 1903, the Macdonald Consolidated School was built with funding from Sir William Macdonald, a prosperous tobacco manufacturer. It was the first Consolidated School in Canada, uniting the Middleton, Spa Springs, East Brooklyn, West Brooklyn, Nictaux, Nictaux Falls, Wilmot and South Farmington school sections. After the first three years, four of these communities withdrew from the consolidated experiment due to funding concerns. The Macdonald Consolidated School
continued to operate until 1979. In 1982, after extensive renovations, the building was officially re-opened and continues to serve as an educational institution as the Annapolis Valley Macdonald Museum.
